Topre Type Heaven Keyboard Review

$

KitGuru has reviewed many keyboards over the years – suited to a variety of tastes and demands. Today we are looking at the Topre Type Heaven model featuring high grade Electrostatic Capacitive Switches rated at 50 million keystrokes. Is it worth the $150 asking price?

As the name would suggest, the Type Heaven keyboard by Topre is primarily designed with one goal in mind – to achieve the best experience for users who spend a lot of time typing.

Topre may not be an immediately well known name in the enthusiast sector, but they are an electrical, plastics and metal materials manufacturer based in Japan. They also create touch sensors, industrial credit card readers and touch panels. How is this relevant to a keyboard you say? Well Topre key switches are used in critical data entry applications in industries that require the highest levels of reliability.

ACC_4087_DxO
The Type Heaven keyboard arrives in a plain black box with elegant gold type highlighting the product name on the front of the box.
ACC_4089_DxO
The label bottom left of the box explains some of the key features including the Electrostatic Capacitance Key Switches and 6 key rollover.

The more observant among you will already have noticed that our particular sample is distributed in America by Seasonic, best known for their class leading power supplies. While Seasonic are not the sole distributor in America, they are offering a 2 year warranty with every unit sold.

Seasonic say that this keyboard might make it to European shores sometime in the future, although this is not confirmed right now. You can import one however from various locations if interested.
ACC_4090_DxO
Inside the box is a warranty leaflet, alongside a thin user guide. The warranty leaflet from Topre does state that the keyboard has only a single year warranty, but clearly Seasonic have a lot of faith in the design to effectively double it. We tested the keyboard on both OSX 10.9 Mavericks and Windows 7/8.

USB flash drives are a useful device to have at home or work, we use them all the time in the Kitguru labs for moving large amounts of data between systems. Today we review something rather special however – the latest high capacity USB 3.0 drive from Corsair which claims to have a read speed around 260 MB/s.

The Corsair Voyager GS 128GB USB 3.0 drive landed with us last week week and it certainly caught our eye. It ships in a sleek metal enclosure and the claimed speeds look to be right up there with the fastest 256GB and 512GB units we have tested, from companies such as Kingston and Patriot.

This week AMD launch their new R9 270 graphics card – set to replace the HD7850 at the lower end of the enthusiast gaming market. Thankfully today we haven’t been forced to review a reference AMD solution and instead we can focus on some higher grade partner cards. Our second launch review today focuses on the new ASUS R9 270 Direct CU II featuring high out of the box overclocks and a custom two fan cooler.

Both of our launch reviews feature cards with custom cooling solutions, and the ASUS R9 270 uses the very capable Direct CU II cooler which we have seen in various guises on other ASUS cards in recent months.
first page
The new R9 270 is only $20 cheaper than the R9 270x. According to AMD documentation the pricing at time of launch is 270x $199 and 270 $179.
screenshot373
The official specifications for the R9 270 are shown above. AMD have given the card 1,280 Stream Processors – the same as the R9 270X version. The 270 core clock is significantly reduced, with AMD stating a maximum speed of 925mhz. Both partner cards we are reviewing today are overclocked and ignore the reference rating.

The R9 270 has 32 ROPS and 80 Texture Units with 2GB of GDDR5 connected via a 256 bit memory interface. Memory speeds are rated at 1,400mhz, or 5.6 Gbps effective. Typical board power is rated to 150W, which is the same as the HD7850 before it. The basic specifications are identical to the R9 270X, with lower core clock speeds differentiating the models.

This week AMD launch their new R9 270 graphics card – set to replace the HD7850 at the lower end of the enthusiast gaming market. Thankfully today we haven’t been forced to review a reference AMD solution and instead we can focus on some higher grade partner cards.

We all love to see the reviews of the high end hardware such as the R9 290X and GTX780 Ti, but they account for a very small percentage of overall company sales for AMD or Nvidia. The high volume sales come in the lower end market and AMD have been keen to replace their long term HD7850 before the end of the year. The new R9 270 should be priced in the same zone, while bringing more power to the table.

first page
The R9 270 is set to compliment the faster R9 270X, much like the HD7850 paired up with the HD7870 in the past. US pricing of the 270 is set at $179, or 134 euros in Europe. We therefore expect UK pricing to be between £130-£140 inc vat.

Palit GTX 780 Ti JetStream OC Review (1600p, Ultra HD 4K)

It has certainly been an interesting couple of months for the high end gaming enthusiast. In October AMD brought out their R9 290 and R9 290X which took the performance crown from Nvidia. We felt both cards were fantastic, but the substandard reference cooler forced us to offer a hesitant recommendation, and we have advised people to wait on the custom cooled solutions. The Nvidia GTX780Ti was then released earlier this month, reclaiming the crown. While AMD partners still scramble to bring improved R9 290/290X models to market, Nvidia are already a leap ahead. Today we review a highly customised, overclocked three fan card from market leader, Palit.

firstpage
Palit claim the Jetstream cooler will be 7dBa quieter than the reference design while dropping temperatures by up to 10c under load.

Three fans cover the full width of the PCB, two of which are 90mm in diameter, and the other 80mm. These are optimised to deliver substantial airflow across the heatsinks underneath. The board has adopted an 8 phase power delivery system to enhance overclocking and stability.

The new Palit GTX 780 Ti Jetstream is clocked much higher than the reference GTX780 Ti. The GK 110 core speed has been increased from 876mhz to 980mhz.

Today we test hardware with a 30 inch Apple Cinema HD display (2,560×1,600) and with our new ASUS PQ321QE Ultra HD 4K Monitor (3,840×2,160). It will be interesting to see if the GTX 780 Ti’s 3GB of GDDR5 memory will be a limiting factor powering the latest games at 4K.

The 4K ASUS PQ321QE panel retails with a whopping £2999.99 asking price , however we would expect this cost to drop in 2014.

Setting up this monitor is simple with both AMD and Nvidia hardware (via DisplayPort cable) and we didn’t experience any issues. To achieve a refresh rate of 60hz after the Forceware or Catalyst drivers were installed we enable the Multi Stream Transport mode within a submenu of the Asus PQ321QE.

Today we test using the latest Catalyst and Forceware drivers (13.11 beta9 and 331.82 respectively).

With the growing rise in popularity of new high resolution Ultra Wide monitors we take a look at the AOC Q2963PM. This panel has support for both Dual Link DVI and DisplayPort connectors and can output at 2,560×1080 resolution. If you need a lot of deskspace is this a cost effective upgrade at the end of the year?

We have seen opinion split in regards to the new series of Ultra Wide monitors, some of our readers love them while others feel that the unusual 21:9 aspect ratio doesn’t bring anything really practical to the table.

Samsung 840 EVO 1TB SSD Review

$

In the run up to Christmas there is no better time to treat yourself to a new bit of kit. How about a new Solid State Drive? How about one that can handle your operating system and all your files and games as well? Today we revisit the Samsung EVO 1TB which is available now for less than £450 inc vat.

It may be hard to believe but there was a time when a Solid State drive was £10 per GB. Prices this year have dropped to an all time low with the Crucial M500 960GB available for only £373.00 inc vat. The Samsung EVO 1TB may be more expensive but it is quicker and offers a slightly higher capacity.

The Samsung 840 EVO uses NAND manufactured on a 19nm process. This has meant that Samsung have been able to increase the capacity to 1TB, a size that a couple of years ago would have seemed impossible. Technically the process shrinks can mean that product lifespan is reduced as well. This is due to more electrons being trapped in the smaller oxide layers and these will wear out over time.

Samsung however have clearly still got confidence in the product as they give a three year warranty with these EVO drives, although it is worth bearing in mind that is reduced from the five year warranty supplied with the Pro series.

Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC Review (1600p, Ultra HD 4K)

In November AMD released their reference R9 290 and while we were impressed with the frame rate performance we certainly didn’t find it fun dealing with the noisy, ill performing reference cooler. It has been some time coming, but today we look at the first custom cooled, overclocked card from partner Sapphire. It features their tasty Tri X cooler.

Is this the card you need in your new system build as we head into 2014?

first page
The Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC Edition features a custom 3 fan cooler, versions of which have appeared on other Sapphire cards we have reviewed recently, such as the award winning R9 280X Toxic Edition.

Sapphire have overclocked their R9 290 Tri-X from reference speeds of 947mhz to 1GHZ and the GDDR5 memory has also received a speed boost, from 1,250mhz to 1,300mhz. This should translate into a healthy performance boost when compared against the AMD board.

Let’s take a closer look at the card first before putting it through our tests.

Today we test using the latest Catalyst and Forceware drivers (13.11 beta and 331.82 respectively).

AMD fans have been waiting on this for a long time, the eagerly awaited Sapphire custom version of AMD’s R9 290X, featuring their cutting edge Tri-X cooling system. Sapphire have not only adopted their impressive three fan cooler, but they have tweaked the core and memory speeds a little, offering higher ‘out of the box’ performance. Is this the fastest, most powerful (single GPU) AMD video card that money can buy?

Today we supplement our tests by analysing performance at 3840×2160 (4k HD) on the Asus PQ321QE. We recently acquired one of these screens for high end graphics card reviews. Sure, the £2999.99 asking price will mean very few can afford the upgrade right now, but in the next year we expect the cost to drop.

On paper there is no doubt that the R9 290X is a monster, clocked at 1GHZ. The Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X core is clocked higher, to 1,040mhz out of the box, and the memory speeds are set at 1,300mhz (5.2Gbps effective), a 50mhz overclock on the reference card (1,250mhz).

The Hawaii GPU is built on the 28nm process and the card comprises 6.2 billion transistors. The R9 290X has 64 ROP’s, 176 TMU’s and 2,816 unifed shaders. The 4GB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1,250mhz (5Gbps effective) and is connected via an ultra wide 512 bit memory interface. We have tested the reference card when it launched and while we were impressed – the cooling solution was woefully inadequate.

The R9 290X, along with the R7 260X features a programmable audio pipeline. The R9 270X and R9 280X don’t. This new TrueAudio technology is designed for game audio artists and engineers, so they can ‘bring their artistic vision beyond sound production into the realm of sound processing’. This technology is intended to transform game audio as programmable shaders transformed graphics in the following ways:

  • Programmable audio pipeline grants artistic freedom to game audio engineers for sound processing.
  • Easy to access through popular audio libraries used by top game developers.
  • Fundamentally redefines the nature of a modern PC graphics card.
  • Spatialization, reverb, mastering limiters and simultaneous voices are only the beginning.
